It's not clear whether depression causes sleep issues or sleep issues cause depression. Therefore treating sleep issues can help with depression and treating depression can help with sleep.

  • Bipolar Disorder and Sleep Problems (WebMD, undated) - This article discusses the synergy between symptoms of Bipolar Disorder and sleep issues.

  • Friedman, Richard A, Yes, Your Sleep Schedule Is Making You Sick (New York Times, Mar 10, 2017) - This article talks about connections between mental health, sleep, and sunlight.

  • What is Seasonal Affective Disorder? (Regis College) - This page includes an infographic that explains S.A.D. There are connections between sleep issues, S.A.D. and exposure to sunlight.

  • Gee B, Orchard F, Clarke E et al, The effect of non-pharmacological sleep interventions on depression symptoms: A meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials (Sleep Medicine Reviews 43, Feb 2019, pp 118-128) - This article discusses how sleep interventions that don't use medication can help alleviate depression caused by sleep issues.

Organizations

  • Circadian Sleep Disorders Network This is an organization that advocates for awareness of Circadian Sleep Disorders such as Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder, Non-24-Hour Sleep-Wake Disorder. You can get support by participating in the online community Nightowl Email List. If you are interested you can sign up here: www.circadiandisorders.org/list. Also, you can get connected to specialists who work with Circadian Sleep Disorders in your area.

  • American Alliance for Healthy Sleep This organization partners with patients with sleep disorders, providers, and the public to improve the lives of people with sleep disorders and to highlight the importance of sleep. The link above points you to their educational material where you can find information on what healthy sleep is as well as information about various sleep disorders.
